Quartz is the mineral that forms the quartz sandstone, but the sandstones may be entirely composed of rock or coral. The color varies from white, in the case of the sandstones formed virtually pure quartz, almost black, in the case of ferro-magnesium sandstones. The sandstones are among the most porous consolidated rocks. The rock has a good fire resistance.
